Beacons of light

So here we all are, beacons of light, on the eve of a new dawn, ready to shine in what is the darkest day of the year. The Pleiades above are shining brightly, my contact with the stars ever the greater, and the moon is resting in perfect balance between light and dark.

Travelling light

I had a vague memory this morning of last night's dream, where I was carrying a smallish rucksack; I barely remember anything else apart from the feeling of journeying. I am reminded of what I need to leave behind and let go of: all those things that no longer serve me now; the habits that are now irrelevant to me, the repeated thoughts that clutter me up. Lightness, clarity and simplicity.

Yellow violet

I am giving an hours talk tomorrow about the life of a freelance musician in the UK, with musical interludes. It is always strange swapping from playing music to communicating verbally and then returning to the intensity of performing again. I am reminded about the wonderful Alaskan essence, Yellow violet, and the new combination formula: Beyond Words. Easing the journey. That's what it's all about.

Six perfections

I woke up twice in the night of the election: the first time was moments before Obama's victory was declared and the second time was at about six am just as Obama began his speech; freedom, generosity, tolerance, peace and compassion. A great vision for now and the future; what a joy to hear him speak with such grace.

Root Chakra

So last week it was my feet and today it seems important to develop what the root chakra needs so it is activated and in balance. I have been reading about three essences from Sabina Pettitt's Sea Essences range: Brown Kelp, Staghorn Algae, and the magical Sea Horse. It is the energizing of the spine that the Sea Horse helps us with; that wonderful position I find in meditation when my posture relaxes into the root of my being; the feeling I try and recreate to play wonderful long phrases in Bach's music (the Lute Suite today). This relaxation and repositioning relocates us back to our centre and brings wonderful clarity.

Feet and a new planet

I have been thinking about my feet since meditating this morning, trying to find the perfect place of balance to be aligned. It seems more and more important to me each day, in every walk of life: meditation, health, flute playing and being in the right place to meet people.. And what a lift I had to discover a new planet this week! New York Times

Meditation in schools

I read in the paper today about how Dr Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, was recommending meditation for school children to help with the world as it is today. Certainly these moments of silence and calm are a wonderful balance for me in this fast, speeding world. These moments of being bring so much wisdom, at whatever age.

Harmony and Balance

Inspired by Steve Johnson's workshop last weekend, I have spent this week working with the Bagua and the new Alaskan Flower Essence cards. It is amazing how these cards have brought a new dimension to the essences. I am adding music to each section of the Bagua, while working on the different areas in my own home. Starting in the Wealth area, I have been working with the energy of Round Leaved Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) and Bach. May this bring harmony and balance to us all!

Equinox light

I had my own private movie this morning with my coffee; magical light coming in through the leaves of the Banksian rose.

New Dawn

The Autumn Equinox approaches and with it brings a wonderful energy of balance and celebration. As I enjoy the flowering of my new rose at the front door, I think of the new dawn approaching and what it means. Balance and alignment seem more important than ever before; so I think about, looking after ourselves as winter approaches, keeping all our environment clear and uncluttered and celebrating a new way of being and relating.

Clearing

I have had such a deep urge to clear so many different things these past few days. The run up to the new moon is exaggerated in strength as it co-incides with the run up towards the Equinox. Cupboards, paperwork, painting and today re-igniting the fire energy in the garden with a massive turning of the compost. This consists of large, new piles of rich earth which I have started bringing back to the garden. The circle is now complete. These practical things need to be completed by the new moon, then I can concentrate on the beauty of the Equinox.

Energy

Tears of joy engulfed me as I entered the Olympic Park yesterday, greeted by a sea of echinacea, rubeckia, japanese anenomes and fishing rod grasses. My heart opened to the enormity of the whole event, the sea of people, the mass of colour and the gentleness and joyfulness of everyone around. I had the priviledge to watch the goal ball, played in the Copperbox in complete silence. It was so moving to be amongst a crowd, so large, but in total silence, hearing only the light bells ringing within the ball, like the gentle song of a babies rattle; watching the players (only three in a team) stretching their whole body, extending themselves sideways on the ground, stetching as far as possible hoping to deflect the ball. A wave of cosmos waved in the breeze as I left and headed to the Royal Albert Hall for an evening of John Adams: pulsating, upbeat and a another wave of rhythmic energy that got straight in my bones and still hasn't left this morning. Healing stuff.

Stillness, silence and spaciousness

This is what I have been thinking about all week, in whatever I have been doing. It is amazing how the mind wanders about and I have to keep reminding myself about where I am truly wanting to hang out. The birds are barely singing, as they change their feathers; the river is drier than it has been for a while and many of the herbaceous flowers in the garden are beginning to rest. I am thinking more and more about spaciousness in everything I do, as if I am preparing for what the end of the year could bring, or what the ever changing world might require.

Frequency

I have been reading about Anne Callaghan's exciting new essences, In the Pink, that vibrate at 528hz, what is said to be the frequency of Love. I have often tried to repeat my flute meditation, Reindeer Moss, (which explores this frequency, or the note C), on other notes, and it never has the same depth. It is the root note and key of my flute so that frequency always feels so much at home. This is what we all need in these times of such fast change; showing us what to hold onto and respect, and what to shed.

Transience

I have just been given some tender, blue freesias and their scent is exquisite. I keep indulging in their energy and it fills my soul as it dissolves into the air around. I brushed passed a lavender hedge earlier on and its aroma filled the few steps it took to walk past. Part of the beauty of playing music is the fact that the sound dissolves into the space in front of me and then echoes briefly in the acoustic, before merging into the world before.

Inner silence

The noise at the Olympic Stadium sounds incredible; what an amazing energy and how wonderful to bring so many people together in a moment, at one time. I think of the athletes and their focus; the gymnasts poised in perfect balance in the centre of so much energy, allowing their own space inside to be their focus; and I watch as the athletes centre themselves and breathe deeply before they begin. Inspirational.

Diligence

We are in the midst of the Olympic season and I am deeply inspired by the precision and focus of Olympians. It takes so much order, practise and repetition to get to such a high standard; so many hours of dedication and so much sacrifice. In my own life I am at my happiest when I am truly focused and following an intention. These two weeks are an inspiration for us all, whatever field we follow.

Summer songs

I have spent all afternoon sitting under the shade of a tall, majestic ash tree listening to the song of the yellow hammer oscillating between two notes then falling in its descending scale. So many butterflies here in Hardy's Wessex Heights; more relaxation and sounds of summer before a double bill of operas tonight.

Stillness

I took an evening walk in that wonderful light that only the end of the day brings. There is an intense stillness now; the birds have stopped singing, bar the odd shower of sparrows or the comforting coo of the wood pigeon's call; and I can hear the river with its gentle presence. It seems a suitable time for relaxation. I have been playing some of Bach's trio sonatas with a small chamber group: three parts intricately weaving in and out and filling the world with lightness.

The secrets of the universe

I am fascinated by all that has been going on at CERN and now the amazing Higgs boson discovery. I do not really understand it, but I know it feels very exciting and anything connected to the vastness and the minutae of the universe fills my heart with a new depth.

Summer Blues

Dartmoor is covered in mist this morning and all I can see are the colours in the garden. The oranges and yellows of the Welsh poppies, pink and white roses, and thousands of geraniums, pink, white and this amazing blue. Incredible colours to begin the day, enveloped in a deep fog.

Joy

Happy Summer Solstice. The longest day of the year. A group of foxgloves have magically appeared just at my back door and are in their element. Tonight I am playing in one of Mozart's lesser known opera's, Seraglio, in the cloisters of a manor house garden. I am filled by the lightness and depth of Mozart. How he lifts the spirit and touches the soul in the gentlest of ways.

Transformation

There is something about the sound of the wind that fills my heart with a sense of excitement. A storm is brewing, it's force building up, and its strength growing. I find the rhythm calming and expansive and it reminds me of being at sea once more. Somehow this natural force inspires me to breathe more deeply, to tune in to the depths of my soul and listen with intensity. Seventy miles per hour or more in the west: time for great transformation.

Rituals and longevity

Coming up to the Jubilee weekend, my thoughts are on what a wonderful achievement it is for the Queen to have reached sixty years of service. To remain focused on anything for that long is truly admirable. I know that in my own practice what is important to me is some form of repetition in daily life; whether practicing an instrument or through meditation. Things grow in depth through repetition; greater understanding comes, things change and shift and develop. The Queen, and what she represents, have both changed and remained the same; a great paradox for celebration.

Seasons

My Banksian rose is in its element outside my front door and it is just the right day to make an essence; there is so much light and much needed energy from the sun. I have been reading that many roses vibrate at a higher frequency than other plants and it seems that the month of May does too. It will be hard to leave the garden now to go to Exeter Cathedral for Haydn's Seasons. It is truly a perfect early summer's day.

The Chapter House

I have just been playing Britten's War Requiem in Well's Cathedral, exactly fifty years after it was first written. I realise, once more, how important it is to play the right music in the right space. Music needs space around it and different kinds of music need different acoustics. The setting around the concert also adds to its depth: I have watched the evening light transform in Well's Cathedral to a deep blue that matches the cassocks of the Well's Cathedral choir. On this last visit to Well's, I discovered the Chapter House; it seems the most sacred place to do a summer's evening meditation.

Meditation

The sound of the wind has been surrounding my home all day; its ebb and flow like waves on the shore. Jackdaws have been playing and tumbling in the arms of the wind; I am inspired by its meditative sound. I am reminded that by focusing on the breath, I am deeply connected. Listening to the breath is a wonderful beginning to meditation. And, as a dear friend of mine just said, the day is so much better when you meditate.

Water

Having just left the wettest month ever on record, in the middle of a drought, my mind is full of this amazing element and all that it brings. Water, like our emotions, needs to flow. Things become more difficult when things stagnate, when it doesn't rain for weeks on end, when things become out of balance. What a blessing water gives; it cleanses and nurtures and renews. Some of my favourite essences and remedies are ones connected with water - the Alaskan elementals: Portage Glacier, Chalice Well, Polar Ice, Bog and the powerful Tidal Forces; the Sea Essences, Yorkshire Fog, Water Violet, Rock Water, Nat Mur, Hydrogen. I am reminded of their cleansing and sacred power. And so with our own tears: they cleanse and renew our whole energy system.

Bach

Bach creates such a wonderful feeling of order and stability. I have returned after a lot of travelling and what a joy it is to be practicing Bach again. It re-balances me and connects deep to the soul.

Other dimensions

I have been working on a new piece by the Ukrainian composer, Alla Zagaykevych, for flute, clarinet and electronics. I have always been a bit fearful of the energy of playing with electronics but I have been transformed by hearing this part. The electronics are very gentle and seem to take me into a totally different dimension; way out in the Pleiades and beyond.

White Violet

The white violets are here, to the east, opposite my back door. And what a joy their sweet and tender scent is. White Violet is an essence I use a lot; it is perfect for those who are highly sensitive. I have been playing Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony every day this week and I have been charmed by the conductor, Karabits' sensitivity. He changes the emphasis on one tiny note within a phrase which brings the whole symphony alive in a new way. Those tiny details, like the white violet, bring so much strength to life.

Alignment

I'm sure many of us have seen the amazing dance between Venus and Jupiter that has been in the night skies for the last few weeks. The exact conjunction was a week ago on March 15th. I am lucky enough to live in a house that is in perfect alignment at this time of year, with the sun setting exactly in the west. What a wonderful energy the equinox brings: it is easier to get up in the morning and the earth and sun are in perfect balance. We also have the added bonus of Venus and Jupiter in our skies, just look west, and remember your camera when the new moon appears..

The Tao has arrived

You can't rush the Tao, a dear friend of mine said. And here it is. This was recorded in a great flow in 2009 and it seems that this is the moment that it is ready for the world. Coming into Itunes and Amazon in the next week or so. I have a few copies myself for those who can't wait. susie@theseaoftheedge.com
